This anthology is a fitting tribute to the life and fiction of Charles Grant who was the genre's biggest proponent of the "quiet horror" style of storytelling. In addition to short stories in the "quiet horror" tradition, there are appreciations, an interview, and bibliography. Beautiful cover art by Alan Clark and interior art from Gahan Wilson, this volume is signed by 30/31 contributors.

THE NOCTURNE by Steve Gerlach (Limited Edition)

The fires were raging through Washington State. Nothing could withstand the fury. Easton, Lavender and Nelson lay in ruins. There was only one thing left to do now the fires had taken hold...

Flee.

THE BUS

A handful of residents from Ronald take a school bus, grab all the worldly possessions they can hold and escape the flames as the fires near their town.

THE CADILLAC

Donna and Kurt are camping in the Wenatchee National Forest when they hear the news. They need to get back to Ellensberg before the fires cut them off. They need to leave - pronto.

“In the distance the dancing red curtain of flame and destruction rose into the night sky.”

And then the sheriff detours them...

Detoured onto a little-used and winding backroad that no one knows. Nobody knew what lay ahead - only what was behind them.

They were all fleeing from hell. And they arrived someplace worse...

I have the paperback edition of this book that was published here in Australia years ago. I had already read some Gerlach, and when the chance came to get this one, I jumped at it. The Laymon blurb on the front didn't hurt either. Upon reading, I found it to be very Laymonesque in it's style and theme. Fast paced, well thought out and just a damn fine read! Gerlach is the KING of Aussie horror.

I have the Australian signed edition and it is awesome! You must order! The sheriff detours people into a world of hell. I don't want to give away anything but this book is shocking!

Author: William C. Rasmussen
Steve Gerlach's The Nocturne is a decent read, very Laymonesque, as already stated. A group of disparate people are detoured due to a huge forest fire, get in a wreck, and go through hell from their would-be rescuers. I was intrigued from the get-go, but kind of let down at the end. Nothing is really explained. Also, I believe this was a very early novel from Gerlach, and it appears dated (no cellphones, etc.). In all, a good read, very good production values from CCP, but Gerlach's done better. Recommended.
