Etchinson undeniably has talent, but reading this collection, I found his style didn't work for me. It felt labored, like he was straining too hard. I feel a writer's style should be almost invisible, leaving no barrier between reader and story. For me, my suspension of disbelief kept being broken because the overwrought writing style kept distracting me, jerking me back out of the fictional worlds. Just my opinion of course.

Testimonials
I recently received my very first order from Horror Mall and I have to say - I'm extremely impressed! The 3 books only took a week to get here (and from the US to the UK, that's pretty darn good!) and they're in excellent condition! I'm definitely going to use Horror Mall again, and I'm definitely going to recommend the site to anyone who will listen... and probably some that won't!

The books are gorgeous and the packaging is the best this eBay junkie has ever seen. I'm in so much trouble when my wife looks at the Visa bill...

THE GIRL IN THE WOODS by David Jack Bell (Trade Paperback)
THE GIRL IN THE WOODS by David Jack Bell (Trade Paperback)

When Diana Greene leaves her hometown for a new life, she thinks she has left the past behind: her sister’s disappearance, her mother’s illness, and the visions Diana used to see…a clearing in the woods…a moonlit night…and human bones buried in the ground.

And her past remains dormant until the day a mysterious woman appears on Diana’s doorstep, promising Diana something she can’t resist.

“If you help me find my missing daughter, I’ll tell you what happened to your sister.”

Soon Diana is digging into the past, uncovering secrets the town has long since buried, secrets that the powerful wish would stay hidden. But when another girl disappears and the visions return to Diana with a vengeance, she knows she is on the brink of solving more than just a few missing person’s cases. She is on the brink of discovering the dark and violent covenant that the town itself was founded upon.

"THE GIRL IN THE WOODS begins with all the terrible inevitability of a nightmare, and from those first words the reader is trapped, rapturously, desperately. Ruined lives litter this landscape. Lethal secrets lurk. David Jack Bell’s writing proves hypnotic, seductive, until a quiet sense of dread grows almost unbearable. With passionate intelligence, sensitivity and craft, Bell draws you in … and doesn’t let you go."
—Robert Dunbar, author of THE PINES and THE SHORE

"David Jack Bell's THE GIRL IN THE WOODS is a deliciously creepy and deeply disturbing story of unnatural appetites and enduring evil. It's brisk, bizarre and brutal!"
—Jonathan Maberry, multiple Bram Stoker Award winning author of
PATIENT ZERO and THE WOLFMAN

"David Jack Bell explores the dark forests of the human mind through real characters and a brisk pace. A gripping tale that kept my stomach clenched."

—Scott Nicholson, author of THEY HUNGER

"David Jack Bell enters Charles Grant territory with THE GIRL IN THE WOODS, a novel of finely honed characters facing mysterious disappearances, madness, and loss on many levels.  A masterful job."

"Just beneath the normal, lurk madness and waiting wickedness in David Jack Bell's THE GIRL IN THE WOODS. Because of the author's precise rendering of the mundane world--the one where we usually dwell, folks--its day to day fears and challenges and mysteries, the horror the novel reveals really does horrify. Bell gives us a world that's as real as an assisted living senior center or a police department's missing person report: we understand, we identify, we are there ... And then Normal vanishes and Terror hits. With neither zombie nor vampire nor next month’s frightful flavor, David Jack Bell gives us the genuine article: a horror novel."
—Mort Castle

Author: William C. Rasmussen
The Girl In The Woods, David Jack Bell's followup to his fine first novel, The Condemned, is a good, solid sophomore effort. The writing is good, the plot good, the characters well-drawn--in fact, it was a good novel overall. Just nothing fantastic! The two flaws, in my opinion: the killer was identified early-on, so there was no real mystery; and the plot was quite pedestrian, it's been done before a number of times. I expected a bit more from the author, and was quite disappointed with this effort, moreso in view of all the glowing reviews it's garnered. Recommended, but just barely.

I have not been dissapointed yet with the books that I have been getting. I really enjoy the part of wondering what will come out next, and Girl in the woods sounds just like my kind of book, with all the thrill and pleasure of haunts. I have tried other book store online and have been very dissapointed with what I received, but not with this book club. I am so glad that I found you people and your book club, and whenever I have a question you always get right back to me unlike others. Also I am being interduced to a lot of Author that I have never heard of and it is great.
Thanks Guys.
